Near Disaster above Splintered Rock

Pilot Cursa Charisma describes attack to Capt. Falcon53 Neox; lure fireworks box in foreground.

SPLINTERED ROCK - Splintered Rock was the scene of what was almost a major disaster when a terrorist shot the pilot of an unarmed civilian cargo shuttle during takeoff.

Independent trader Cursa Charisma had two passengers aboard as he prepared to visit an orbital station under construction over "the Rock", the desert world known for the drug known as "spice".

His attention was drawn by the sight of a woman lighting off festival fireworks on the rooftop of a building overlooking the pad, which had been vacant for several weeks. He thus had a clear view when she aimed an assault rifle at his ship and opened fire.

Despite being struck in the arm, torso, and head, Charisma was able to hit thrusters and continue his ascent out of range of the terrorist's weapon. Before succumbing to shock and blood loss, the pilot managed to declare an emergency and set the ship to an automatic landing setting which brought is safely back to the pad. After emergency medical treatment, Charisma's condition was stabilized, and doctors say he will make a full recovery.

The Splintered Rock landing pad was crowded with ships at the time, and contains not only fuel storage facilities, but the main collection point for drinking water on a planet that has no standing water at all. Had the terrorist succeeded in causing the vessel to crash, experts say, the results could have been catastrophic.

The Scout Service responded immediately to the pilot's distress call, and took jurisdiction over the investigation, as an emergency declared by a vessel in flight.

Baron Tardis, IS-12, Station Chief/Arrakis, declined to cooperate with this story, saying, "I cannot comment on the operational details of an ongoing investigation".

Sources have revealed, however, that a vehicle abandoned on the roof of the vacant building was registered to one Alvus Basevi. Basevi is on record as a member of a nativist extremist group linked to terrorist activities. Basevi has also been found on public record as "assistant to Mooz Honi". Honi is a self-declared "Fedayn", or "freedom-fighter", as extremists among the nativist tribes of the planet call themselves.

When showed images of the suspects, the wounded pilot Cursa Charisma positively identified Honi as the individual who shot him. Sources also report that the vacant building itself had been rented for the past several weeks by none other than Alvus Basevi and Mooz Honi. This, along with the use of the fireworks as a lure, proves a terrorist conspiracy with careful planning.

Voices are already questioning the security measures of the constable and governor, both of whom were unavailable to answer questions. Sources close to the governor said, however, that anti-offworlder activity has been low for some time, and expressed shock at this sudden and unprecedented act.

Shortly after the attack, sources witnessed Station Chief Tardis and Captain Falcon53 Neox, heavily armed, heading into the desert. Captain Neox was overheard talking about making a strike on a newly discovered cave in the desert, presumably the base of the terrorists or those who support them.
